Monumento a la Mora (Moorish Monument)
Sculpture by the artist Josefina Monter Ardanuy, located in Villanueva de Sigena on the hillock that bears her name. Our ancestors and local historians tell the legend of a Moor woman who after the Reconquest was left alone after the death of her husband and children, and pleaded not to be expelled. She said that she would live in a cave that was located in the hillock and that she did not want to be bothered by anyone. They gave her permission and respected her wish. There she lived the rest of her days and nights. She used to go down to the river to fetch water and wash. They say those who saw her, going up or down the mountain, had luck on their side, which made it a kind of myth or talisman. Since then this place is known as la subida o bajada (the rise or fall), or el tozal de la Mora (The Moorish Hillock). Inside the jar of the sculpture sealed forever are the words, poems and drawings of children who participated in its inauguration in 2006.
